Fixing Vertical Bands Lines or Streaks in Copies or Scans
This tutorial shows what to do when you copyor scan an original document and the output contains vertical bands, lines,or streaks. The printer shown in this tutorial is the Photosmart 5510. Your printer might look different, but thesteps will be similar. Static interference with the printer or loosecable connections can result in bands or lines in the copy or scan output. In this step you will check the printer'sconnections and reset the printer. First, press the power button to turn on the printer.
Turn to the back of the printer. With the printer powered on, disconnect thepower cord from the printer. Unplug the other end of the power cord fromthe wall outlet. Wait 15 seconds. It is important to wait a full 15 secondsto allow the print mechanism to reset. Then, plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. Reconnect the power cord to the printer. Make sure the power cord is securely connectedto the back of the printer
and into the wall outlet. If the printer connects to a computer witha USB connection, make sure that the USB cable is securely connectedto the printer and to the computer. Return to the front of the printer. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the power button to turn the printer on. Copy or scan the original document again. If the output quality is good, the issue is resolved.
If you are still experiencing issues, continueon to the next step. Fingerprints, smudges, and other debris canaffect copy and scan quality. In this step you will clean the scanner glass and backing. Before you begin, gather the following materials: A clean, lintfree cloth. A mild glass cleaner. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives,acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride.
These substances can damage the printer. Avoid using isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol, because these can leave streaks on the scanner glass. Press the power button to turn the printer off. Turn to the back of the printer. Disconnect the power cord. Return to the front of the printer. Lift the scanner lid.
Spray a clean, lintfree cloth with mild glass cleaner. Do not spray glass cleaner directly on thescanner glass. Doing so can damage the printer. Thoroughly clean the scanner glass with thedamp cloth. Dry the scanner glass with a dry lintfreecloth to prevent spotting. Thoroughly clean the scanner backing withthe damp cloth. Dry the scanner backing with a dry lintfree cloth. Close the scanner lid.

This tutorial shows how to resolve streaks, lines,and vertical bands when you copy, fax, or scan a document. These steps only apply to scanning, faxing,and copying, not when directly printing an original document. Turning on the printer while the scanner lidis open might cause incomplete scanner calibration, resulting in poor scan quality. The printer must first be powered on. To properly calibrate your printer, removepaper and other items from the scanner glass, and close the scanner lid.
Remove any paper from the ADF tray. Turn to the back of the printer. Without turning the printer off, remove thepower cord from the printer. Disconnect the other end of the power cordfrom its power source. Wait a full 15 seconds to allow the printmechanism to reset. This will force your printer to perform afull calibration of all the printer systems. Reconnect the power cord to its power source. Then, reconnect the other end of the powercord to the printer.
Return to the front of the printer. If the printer does not automatically turnon, press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait until the printer turns on and stopsmaking noise before proceeding. The printer will perform a calibration. Wait until the printer turns on, the homescreen appears, and the scanner light bar stops making noise, indicating the calibrationis complete, before proceeding. Try making a copy using the ADF tray to seeif the issue is resolved.
The control panel navigation shown might varydepending on your printer model. Slide out the input tray. Align a stack of paper by tapping it on aflat surface. Load paper into the input tray until it stops. Slide the paper length and width guides inwarduntil they stop at the edge of the paper. Do not push the guides in so tightly thatthey start to bend the paper. Slide in the input tray. Load a blank, white sheet of paper into theADF tray.
